John 16

²They will put you out of the synagogues. Yes, the time is coming when whoever kills you will think that he is offering service to God.

³And these things will they do to you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.

⁴But I have told you these things so that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you about them. I did not say these things to you at the beginning, because I was with you.

⁵But now I am going to the one who sent me, and none of you asks me, “Where are you going?”

⁶But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.

⁷Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is better for you that I go away. For if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send him to you.

⁸And when he comes, he will show the world that it is wrong about sin, righteousness, and judgment:

⁹concerning sin, because they do not believe in me;

¹⁰Concerning righteousness, because I go to my Father, and you will no longer see me;

¹¹Concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

¹²I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

¹³However, when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. For he will not speak from himself, but whatever he hears, he will speak; and he will show you things to come.

¹⁴He will glorify me, for he will receive what is mine and show it to you.

¹⁵Everything the Father has is mine. Therefore I said that he will take what is mine and show it to you.

¹⁶A little while, and you will not see me: and again, a little while, and you will see me, because I go to the Father.

¹⁷Then some of his disciples said among themselves, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see me; and again, a little while, and you will see me,’ and, ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”

¹⁸Therefore they said, “What is this that he says, ‘A little while’? We do not know what he says.”

¹⁹Now Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, and said to them, ‘Are you asking among yourselves about what I said: “A little while, and you will not see me; and again, a little while, and you will see me”?’

²⁰Truly, truly, I say to you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice: and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.

²¹A woman has sorrow when she is in labor, because her time has come. But as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the pain, because of her joy that a person has been born into the world.

²²And you now have sorrow, but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.

²³And on that day you will ask me nothing. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give it to you.

²⁴Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, so that your joy may be full.

²⁵I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. But the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures, but will tell you plainly about the Father.

²⁶On that day you will ask in my name. I do not say to you that I will ask the Father for you,

²⁷For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came from God.

²⁸I came from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.

²⁹His disciples said to him, “Look, now you speak plainly and use no figure.”

³⁰Now we are sure that you know all things and do not need anyone to ask you. By this we believe that you came from God.

³¹Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe?”

³²Behold, the hour is coming—yes, has now come—when you will be scattered, each one to his own place, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

³³I have spoken these things to you so that in me you might have peace. In the world you will have trouble; but take courage. I have overcome the world.
