Proverbs 14 is a collection of sharp contrasts between the wise and the foolish, the righteous and the wicked. It covers the home, the heart, the tongue, the poor, the king, and the nation — showing that wisdom and folly touch every part of life. A central warning runs through the chapter: things that look right can lead to death, and laughter can hide a grieving heart. The fear of the LORD appears as both a fountain of life and a strong confidence. At every turn, God is concerned not only with what we do but with the direction our heart is truly heading.
Wise choices build up everything around you. Foolish choices tear things down. God sees your heart, and He wants you to walk in His wisdom.
Proverbs 14 is one of the richest chapters in the book for family discipleship, because it moves through so many domains of ordinary life. The chapter opens with a woman who builds her house and one who tears it down with her own hands — a vivid picture of how daily choices either construct or destroy what matters most. Help your children see that wisdom is not passive; it builds. Foolishness destroys — often without realising it.
The chapter contains one of Scripture's most important warnings: 'There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death' (v. 12). Children need to know early that feelings of rightness are not the same as actual rightness. Our hearts can deceive us. This is why God's Word — not our feelings — is the anchor for our choices.
Verses 26–27 give the theological heart of the chapter: fear of the LORD is a strong confidence and a fountain of life. This is not terror — it is reverential awe and trust. Help your children understand that honouring God is not a burden; it is the source of safety, life, and real confidence. It keeps them from the snares of death.
The chapter also has much to say about the poor (vv. 20–21, 31). God notices how we treat those with less. Despising a poor neighbour is sin; showing mercy is happiness. Oppressing the poor is an insult to God who made them. These are strong statements — do not soften them. Pray with your children that God would give them hearts of genuine compassion.
This week, think before each choice: 'Is this wise or foolish? Will this build up or tear down?' Ask God to help you walk in the fear of the LORD — the safe and living path.
