Proverbs 12 continues Solomon's great gallery of contrasts, holding the righteous and the wicked side by side in every verse. The chapter sweeps across a wide range of life: how we learn, how we speak, how we work, how we treat animals, how we handle anger, and what our words do to others. Truth is shown to be permanent; lies, fleeting. Hard work is shown to yield honour; laziness, poverty. Kindness in speech is healing; cruelty is like a sword. The chapter closes with a magnificent promise: the path of righteousness leads to life — and on that path, there is no death.
God rewards honesty, hard work, and kind words. Lying, laziness, and cruel words bring trouble.
Proverbs 12 is an ideal chapter for children because almost every verse connects to daily life — the way we talk, the way we work, the way we respond to being corrected, and the way we treat the vulnerable. The antithetical structure (righteous vs. wicked, truth vs. lies, diligent vs. lazy) helps children understand morality not in abstract terms but through vivid contrasts.
Verses 1 and 15 together make a powerful pair for teaching children about correction: loving instruction and listening to counsel are marks of wisdom, while refusing to be taught and being right in one's own eyes are marks of foolishness.
