Nicodemus heard Jesus literally. He was thinking physically when Jesus was speaking spiritually. Spiritual truth can only be understood with the Spirit's help.

Memory phrase: Nicodemus did not understand yet.

Talk about it: Nicodemus was a smart man — but he missed what Jesus was saying. Can being smart sometimes get in the way of understanding God?

Prayer: Holy Spirit, help me understand the things Jesus says that are hard to grasp.
