Pilate had Jesus beaten and mocked by soldiers, who dressed Him in a purple robe and a crown of thorns. Though Pilate found no fault in Him, the crowd demanded crucifixion. Jesus carried His own cross to Golgotha and was crucified between two criminals. A sign above Him read 'JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.' Soldiers divided His garments. His mother, her sister, and Mary Magdalene stood near the cross. Jesus gave His mother into the care of the beloved disciple. Then He said, 'I thirst,' and after receiving vinegar, He declared, 'It is finished,' bowed His head, and died. A soldier pierced His side — blood and water came out. Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus took His body, wrapped it in linen with spices, and laid it in a new garden tomb.
Jesus gave His life for us. He did not have to die — but He chose to, so we could be forgiven and belong to God forever.
John 19 is the crucifixion chapter — the theological and emotional centre of the entire Gospel. Pilate's repeated declarations that Jesus is innocent (vv4, 6) emphasise that what happened to Jesus was not justice but sacrifice. The crown of thorns and purple robe (vv2-3) are an unintentional truth: the soldiers mocked a real King. The title on the cross — 'JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS' — was written in three languages for all the world to read (v20), and Pilate refused to change it (v22). Jesus's care for His mother in the midst of His own agony (vv26-27) reveals the depth of His love for those who are His. 'It is finished' (v30, Greek: tetelestai) was a commercial term meaning 'paid in full' — the debt of sin is completely paid. The blood and water from His pierced side (v34) confirm He truly died. The burial by Joseph and Nicodemus shows that even secret disciples are summoned forward by the cross. For children: do not soften. Jesus truly suffered. He truly died. He chose it because He loves us. The weight of this moment prepares them for the joy of resurrection in Chapter 20.
Jesus loved you so much that He chose to die for you. He was not forced — He chose it. When you feel unloved or like nobody cares, remember: Jesus went to the cross for you. He said 'It is finished' — which means all the wrong things you have ever done are paid for. You can go to God because Jesus made a way.
