John 7

²Now the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles was near.

³His brothers therefore said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, so that your disciples may also see the works you do.”

⁴“For no one does anything in secret while seeking to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.”

⁵For even his brothers did not believe in him.

⁶Then Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready.”

⁷“The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its works are evil.”

⁸“Go up to this feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, because my time has not yet fully come.”

⁹When he had said these words to them, he remained in Galilee.

¹⁰But after his brothers had gone to the feast, he also went, not openly, but as if in secret.

¹¹Then the Jews looked for him at the feast and asked, “Where is he?”

¹²And there was much whispering among the people about him, for some said, “He is a good man.” Others said, “No, but he deceives the people.”

¹³However, no one spoke openly about him because they feared the Jews.

¹⁴Now about halfway through the feast, Jesus went into the temple and taught.

¹⁵And the Jews were amazed, saying, “How does this man know the writings, having never studied?”

¹⁶Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but belongs to the one who sent me.”

¹⁷“If anyone wants to do his will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I speak from myself.”

¹⁸“The one who speaks from himself seeks his own glory. But the one who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is true, and there is nothing wrong in him.”

¹⁹“Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?”

²⁰The people answered, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?”

²¹Jesus answered them, “I have done one work, and you are all amazed.”

²²“Moses therefore gave you circumcision—not because it came from Moses, but from the ancestors—and you circumcise a male on the Sabbath day.”

²³“If a male receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath?”

²⁴“Do not judge by appearance, but judge with right judgment.”

²⁵Then some people from Jerusalem said, “Is this not the man they are seeking to kill?”

²⁶“But look, he speaks boldly, and they say nothing to him. Do the rulers truly know that this is the Christ?”

²⁷“However, we know where this man comes from. But when the Christ comes, no one will know where he comes from.”

²⁸Then Jesus cried out while teaching in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from. I have not come from myself, but the one who sent me is true, and you do not know him.”

²⁹“But I know him: for I am from him, and he has sent me.”

³⁰Then they sought to seize him, but no one laid hands on him because his hour had not yet come.

³¹And many among the people believed in him and said, “When the Christ comes, will he do more miracles than this man has done?”

³²The Pharisees heard the people whispering these things about him, and the Pharisees and chief priests sent officers to seize him.

³³Then Jesus said to them, “I am with you for a little while longer, and then I go to the one who sent me.”

³⁴“You will seek me, and will not find me: and where I am, there you cannot come.”

³⁵Then the Jews said among themselves, “Where will he go that we will not find him? Will he go to those scattered among the Gentiles and teach the Gentiles?”

³⁶“What does this saying mean: ‘You will seek me and will not find me, and where I am, you cannot come’?”

³⁷On the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.”

³⁸“The one who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, from inside him will flow rivers of living water.”

³⁹(But he spoke this about the Spirit, whom those who believe in him should receive. For the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.)

⁴⁰Many among the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, “Truly, this is the Prophet.”

⁴¹Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some asked, “Will the Christ come from Galilee?”

⁴²“Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from David’s descendants and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?”

⁴³So there was a division among the people because of him.

⁴⁴And some of them wanted to seize him, but no one laid hands on him.

⁴⁵Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why have you not brought him?”

⁴⁶The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man.”

⁴⁷Then the Pharisees answered them, “Are you also deceived?”

⁴⁸“Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in him?”

⁴⁹“But these people who do not know the law are cursed.”

⁵⁰Nicodemus—who had come to Jesus by night and was one of them—said to them,

⁵¹“Does our law judge anyone before it hears him and learns what he does?”

⁵²They answered him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and see, for no prophet arises from Galilee.”

⁵³And each person went to his own house.
