"See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many." (Hebrews 12:15) Imagine someone hurts you deeply. You are incredibly angry. You want to punish them.
So, you reach into a fire and pick up a burning hot coal. You hold it tight in your bare hand, waiting for the perfect moment to throw it at them. But while you wait... who is actually getting burned?
You are. Your hand is scorching. The pain is yours. Even if you finally throw it and hit them, you are the one left with the permanent, disfiguring scar. Bitterness is holding a hot coal. We think our anger is punishing the person who hurt us.
But usually, that other person is sleeping soundly. They might not even know you are mad. Meanwhile, you are losing sleep. Your stomach is tied in knots. You are rotting from the inside out. Forgiveness is not saying "What they did was okay."
Forgiveness is simply dropping the coal . It is letting go of your right to punish them, so your own hand can finally heal.
Digging Deeper
Hebrews calls this a "Root of Bitterness." Roots grow underground. You can't see them at first. But eventually, they grow up and produce toxic fruit (like anger, sarcasm, and gossip) that "defiles many."
If you are bitter at just one person, that poison will eventually leak out onto your spouse, your kids, and your friends. You cannot box up hate. If you harbor hatred for one person, your ability to love everyone else shrinks.
Reflect on this: Is there an old grudge living in your heart right now? Are you replaying an argument in your head from five years ago? Drop the coal. It is not protecting you; it is cooking you. Hand the judgment over to God.
He handles justice much better than you do. 👣 Take a Step Action: The Release. Think of the person who hurt you the most. Visualize a hot, burning coal in your hand. Now, physically open your hand and drop it.
Say out loud: "I release them. I will not carry this burn anymore. God, You handle the justice. I choose peace."
