The Orphan and the Son

"For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, 'Abba! Father!'" (Romans 8:15) Imagine two boys in a kitchen.

Boy A is an Orphan who was just hired to wash dishes. He washes them perfectly because he is afraid. He thinks, "If I break a plate, I will be fired. If I don't work hard, I won't eat." Boy B is the Son of the owner.

He also washes dishes. But he does it with joy. He knows that if he breaks a plate, his father might be unhappy, but he won't be fired. He has a seat at the table that he didn't earn and can't lose. Many Christians live like the Orphan.

They serve God, but their engine is Fear . "If I don't pray enough, God will punish me." "I need to earn my blessing." This is the Spirit of Slavery . God doesn't want employees; He wants Sons and Daughters.

The Son serves harder than the Orphan, not to get the Father's love, but because he already has it. Discipleship is moving your heart from the Bunkhouse (Employee) to the Bedroom (Son).

Theologically, Adoption is the highest privilege of the Gospel. Justification makes you right in the courtroom (Judge declares you Innocent). Adoption makes you intimate in the living room (Father declares you Family).

In Roman law, an adopted son had all the rights of a natural son. His old debts were cancelled. His old name was gone. You cannot be "un-adopted." Using the word "Abba" (Daddy) was radical. No Jew dared to call Yahweh "Dad."

Jesus gave us His own relationship with the Father. Reflect on this: When you sin, what is your first reflex? To run from God (Fear/Orphan)? Or to run to God (Trust/Son)? Orphans hide. Sons confess. 👣 Take a Step Action: The Name Change.

Set a reminder on your phone that says: "I am a Son/Daughter, not a Slave." When you feel the pressure to "perform" for God today, stop. Say: "God loves me because of Jesus, not because of my dishes."
