The Spoke in the Wheel

(Dietrich Bonhoeffer)Imagine a madman driving a car at high speed down a busy street called the Kurfürstendamm in Berlin. He is crushing pedestrians, causing chaos and death.A group of pastors is standing on the sidewalk watching the horror.

One pastor says, "Our job as Christians is to run out and bandage the victims who are hit by the car. We must show mercy."That sounds noble. It sounds Christian.But one young pastor named Dietrich Bonhoeffer disagrees.

He says, "No. If a madman is driving the car, we do not just bandage the victims under the wheel. We must jam a spoke into the wheel to stop the car." This was the crisis of the church in Nazi Germany.

In the 1930s, when Hitler rose to power, most of the German church (the "German Christians") compromised. They put Nazi flags on the altar. They removed the "Jewish" parts of the Bible. They wanted a comfortable, safe religion that fit in with the culture.

They practiced Cheap Grace : they wanted the comfort of religion without the cost of following Jesus.Bonhoeffer refused. He saw that you cannot follow Christ and bow to a tyrant. He started the "Confessing Church" to stand against the Nazis.

He ran an illegal underground seminary. Eventually, he was arrested for plotting against Hitler and was hanged in a concentration camp just days before the war ended.He taught us that Christianity is not just a set of beliefs to hold in your head; it is a life of obedience that might cost you everything.

(Tap to expand)Theologically, Bonhoeffer gave us the vital distinction between Cheap Grace and Costly Grace . Cheap Grace: This is viewing God's love as a "Bargain Basement" item. It is the idea that because Jesus paid for everything, I can do whatever I want.

It is "Fire Insurance"—I have the card in my wallet, so I am safe from hell, but it doesn't change how I live. It is forgiveness without repentance. Costly Grace: It is "Costly" because it cost God the life of His Son.

It is "Grace" because it is given to us freely. But because it cost Him everything, it demands everything from us.It costs a man his life (he must die to his old self).It calls for Action , not just mental assent.

Bonhoeffer famously wrote: "When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die." Reflect on this:Is your faith "Cheap"? Do you assume God will forgive you, so you sin intentionally?Do you avoid speaking up for the truth because it might be socially awkward?

Do you want the Crown of Christ without the Cross of Christ? 👣 Take a Step A faith that costs nothing is worth nothing. This week, identify one area where you have been "silent" to stay comfortable/safe (at work, with family, or in politics).

Break the silence. Speak the truth in love, even if it costs you some social points. Be a spoke in the wheel, not just a spectator.
