In chapter 8, Wisdom speaks out loud — calling from the high places, from the city gates, from every busy street. She is not hiding! She invites everyone to listen to her. She says her words are true and better than silver and gold. Then Wisdom shares something amazing: she was with God before He made the world! She was right there when He stretched out the sky and set the oceans in their place, rejoicing and delighting in everything God made — especially people. The chapter ends with a beautiful invitation: find Wisdom, and you find life.
Wisdom is God's greatest gift — it was there at creation and leads us to life.
Proverbs 8:22-31 is one of the richest passages in the Old Testament. Many church fathers — including Origen, Athanasius, and Augustine — saw Lady Wisdom here as a portrait of Christ, the eternal Word present at creation (John 1:1; Colossians 1:16-17). For children, the wonder of Wisdom being present at creation is a beautiful entry point: before mountains, oceans, or stars existed, God's wisdom was already there, delighting and rejoicing. You can gently note: 'Some teachers in the church believe this is pointing to Jesus, who was with God before anything was made.' The invitation at the end of the chapter (vv32-35) is a direct gospel call: find Wisdom and find life.
This week, every morning say: 'God, give me your wisdom today.' When you must make a choice — even a small one — pause and ask: 'What is the wise thing to do?' Then do it.
