Six days before Passover, Jesus returns to Bethany. Mary pours expensive perfume on Jesus' feet in love. The next day, crowds wave palm branches as Jesus enters Jerusalem on a donkey — the King has come! Some Greeks ask to see Jesus. He says His hour has come. Like a seed that dies to bear fruit, He must die to bring life to many. A voice from heaven confirms His mission. Jesus declares He is the light of the world — believe in Him before darkness comes.
Jesus is the King who came to die so we could live. When we believe in Him — the Light of the world — we are brought out of darkness and into His life forever.
John 12 is a chapter of dramatic turning points. It opens with Mary's extravagant act of worship (vv1-8) — a model of love that prioritises Jesus above cost or criticism. The Triumphal Entry (vv12-19) fulfils Zechariah 9:9 and publicly announces Jesus as King — yet His kingdom is not what the crowd expects. The Greeks seeking Jesus (vv20-22) signals that the Gospel is for all nations, not Israel alone. Jesus' seed-dying-to-bear-fruit teaching (v24) is the core of cross theology explained for everyone: death leads to life. The voice from heaven (v28) and Jesus' declarations about light and darkness (vv35-36, 46) give children a vivid framework: trust Jesus now, while the light is here. The chapter ends with Jesus' final public teaching before the cross. The hard truth of vv37-43 — people who saw miracles still refused to believe, and leaders who believed stayed silent from fear of people — gives parents a chance to discuss courageous faith vs. people-pleasing.
Mary showed her love for Jesus with everything she had. The crowds welcomed Jesus as King. You can welcome Jesus as your King today too! When you trust Jesus, He brings you out of darkness — like turning on a light in a dark room. He came to give you life. Trust the Light!
