buffeted him: Εκολαφισαν: strong:G2852, "smote him with their fists," as Theophylact interprets.

smote him: Ερραπισαν: strong:G4474, "smote him on the cheek with the open hand," as Suidas renders. They offered him every indignity, in all its various and vexatious forms.
