The state of things here described is exactly what the pages of Josephus and of Tacitus disclose as to the combustible state of the Jewish mind generally just before the commencement of the Jewish war.

The Roman power was the one element of quiet and order. The tower of Antonia was the one place of safety in Jerusalem.
